VE Day

Today is VE Day. Victory in Europe. We would have a very different world without both VE and VJ days. Most likely quite worse than the sorry mess we have in many places today. Ah, the bright side. In homage to those who died in WW2, in whatever capacity and on whatever side, and to those who survived and carry the burden of memories I dedicate this day's entry. War is ultimately about individuals, as any soldier will tell you.

It's interesting you should focus on the individual. My father's birthday is also today, and he was a marine during World War II. He enlisted as soon as he could at the age of 17, lied about his flat feet, picked up a gun and a duffel, and shipped out to China where he served through the end of the war and during the U.S. occupation afterward.

When the conversation turns toward that time, as it often does when the Bushmills is flowing, he doesn't speak of the bullets or the battles. He talks people. Lenny Barber who was one of his barracks mates; Col. Frisbee who offered rides to walking enlisted men and drove them himself; Ho who worked in the mess hall and turned them on to Chinese hooch, these are the punctuation marks of his tales. His focus is always on the people he knew. Afterall what is a time period but the creation of those who were there?

p.s. is it good enought to get me a freelance job with edible San Francisco.
